Case Study: Digital Modernization at Scale for Macromex

Transforming legacy systems into a unified cloud analytics platform

Client Overview

Macromex is one of Romania’s leaders in food distribution and cold-chain logistics. Their operations rely on several core systems: Their ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system for orders, RPS (Route Planning Solution) for deliveries and WMS for warehouse management, along with other internal platforms that generate large volumes of data. With such a complex environment, accurate and scalable reporting is essential.

The Challenge

Before partnering with Pepas Cloud and Crayon Romania, Macromex operated a traditional on-premise setup that included Oracle and SQL Server databases, legacy OLAP cubes, and Excel-based reporting processes. These tools had served the company well for many years, but as operations grew, maintaining consistency across reports and supporting increasing data volumes became more challenging.
To continue scaling efficiently and unlocking faster, unified insights, Macromex sought a modern cloud-ready foundation for analytics.

Project Goals

The main goals were to migrate all major data systems to Microsoft Fabric, replace Excel and OLAP reporting with Power BI, and create a unified semantic model for all business data. In parallel, the initiative also focused on shifting from heavy CAPEX hardware investments to predictable OPEX cloud subscriptions. Together, these efforts established a single, reliable foundation for company-wide reporting and decision-making.

The Solution

The solution focused on a full modernization of Macromex’s data ecosystem.
All major systems, including RPS, ERP, WMS, and several internal platforms, were migrated to Microsoft Fabric, replacing the OLAP cubes and on-premise servers. A unified Power BI semantic model brought structure and consistency to reporting, while standardized dashboards replaced fragmented Excel files.

By shifting to a Platform as a Service architecture, Microsoft now handles updates, scaling, security, and hardware management. This allows Macromex to focus on insights rather than infrastructure. Pepas Cloud continues to provide ongoing optimization, performance improvements, new data models, and support for both advanced and beginner Power BI users.

Implementation

The project was delivered in structured phases, beginning with the largest system, the ERP, followed by the RPS and WMS. After the initial migrations, we unified data across systems and developed the Power BI semantic models that now support consistent reporting. Power BI dashboards were created in close collaboration with the Macromex team, and workspaces were reorganized to suit different user groups. The partnership remains active, with ongoing improvements and support as their needs evolve.

Results

Macromex now benefits from a stable and scalable cloud-based analytics architecture. Reporting is centralized and consistent, and the company no longer relies on manual Excel workflows for main reporting processes. The risks and costs of maintaining on-premise hardware have been eliminated. System performance has improved, and the company can scale resources instantly whenever needed.

By shifting from CAPEX hardware spending to OPEX cloud subscriptions, Macromex reduced maintenance efforts and gained predictable operational costs. Teams across the company now use a unified set of KPIs, which supports faster and more confident decision-making.

Conclusion

Through a close partnership and a strategic modernization approach, Pepas Cloud and Crayon Romania helped Macromex move from fragmented and hardware-dependent reporting to a secure, scalable, cloud-native data platform powered by Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.
The result is a future-proof analytics ecosystem that supports growth, improves alignment across teams, and transforms how data is used throughout the organization.
